The Power of the Mind in Medicine

Not monetary policy-related, but nevertheless a very interesting area of policy-making – I am currently working on a volume with Springer Nature on the power of the mind in medicine: the placebo effect, psychedelics, hypnosis, nocebo, meditation and other related areas. My co-editor is Dr John Butler, a neurology lecturer at King’s College. We are only using peer-reviewed research in top journals – research over the last few years has shown extraordinary progress in discovering the neurological pathways that allow profound self-healing from the mind. We have chapters from academics at Harvard, Stanford, Imperial College and UCLA among other institutions.

In the speech below, which was in the USA this summer at the largest longevity conference in the world, I discuss the different aspects of the power of the mind in medicine. My co-speaker is Colonel John B Alexander, who ran several projects in the military looking at human potential (the subject of the Hollywood movie “The Men Who Stare at Goats”), with whom I’ve had many interesting conversations on this topic.
